A classic cocktail after dinner always sounds right, but so does coffee. The perfect compromise? An espresso martini. This retro cocktail (popular in the '80s and '90s) is making a comeback on bar menus. Now, you can make it right in the comfort of your own home! It's a little sweet, a little boozy, and offers a jolt of caffeine that coffee-lovers can appreciate. Be sure to give it a very good shake to get that perfect foamy top!
What is espresso coffee?
Espresso coffee, like regular coffee, is made from coffee beans. The difference is the way that it's brewed. Espresso makers use higher pressure to extract a stronger, more intensely flavored coffee from finely ground beans. Because espresso is more concentrated in flavor (and caffeine!) it's served in small (usually 1 ounce) portions.
How can I make espresso at home?
A stovetop espresso maker is a great, inexpensive device for making espresso. Instant espresso also exists—and if you've ever tried to make trendy whipped coffee, you may have used it. But we don't recommend using it for this martini. The flavor may not be as clean, and it won't produce the same kind of froth as brewed espresso.
A great substitute for freshly brewed espresso is cold brew coffee concentrate, a product found in the refrigerated drink section of most grocery stores. It is made with a large proportion of coffee beans to water to brew, thus making it strong like espresso.
What liquor is best for an espresso martini?
Vodka—what this recipe calls for—is standard. It really lets the other ingredients in the cocktail shine! You should also use your favorite coffee liqueur, such as Kahlúa, in an espresso martini.
What do you garnish an espresso martini?
If you want to jazz up your drink, try garnishing it with three coffee beans or chocolate-covered coffee beans, or lightly dust the top of the martini with a hint of cocoa powder.
When should I serve an espresso martini?
Just like many after-dinner drinks, this drink is great for a party that has the potential to go into the wee hours of the night! If your event is more low-key, serve it alongside one of your favorite chocolate desserts.
