How to Cook Brown Rice

Add some whole grains to your plate with a big scoop of brown rice. The process for cooking brown rice is similar to how to cook white rice—all you need is a little more time. The reward? Perfect chewy grains with a clean nutty flavor that make every minute totally worth it.

There are numerous ways to cook rice, from a rice cooker or steamer basket to a microwave or oven. This recipe sticks to the trusty and consistent saucepan-on-the-stove technique. It guarantees the fluffiest and most evenly cooked brown rice (no more burned pot bottoms or gluey grains). Cook up a batch for the week to use in your favorite grain bowls, burritos, and casserole recipes!

Do you have to rinse brown rice before cooking?

There is no real advantage to rinsing brown rice before cooking, say many experts—though it can help remove any bits of hulls or broken pieces. If you decide to do it, place the rice in a fine-mesh strainer under cold water until it runs clear. Most white rice, on the other hand, should be rinsed to remove excess starch that can make the rice sticky.

How much water do you need to cook brown rice?

Many brown rice producers suggest a 2:1 ratio of liquid to rice. This ratio works well for long-grain rice. Short-grain rice can require a bit less water. A ratio of 1 ¾ cups of water to 1 cup of short- or medium-grain brown rice yields excellent results.

How long should you cook brown rice?

First, let the brown rice simmer uncovered for about 5 minutes over medium-low heat. Then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the brown rice cook for another 35 to 40 minutes for perfectly fluffy grains.

Should you season brown rice?

Most grains taste better with a good pinch of salt and a touch of butter or oil. Both of these ingredients are optional, but help make plain brown rice more flavorful.

Should you let brown rice rest?

Resting brown rice covered for 10 minutes is essential for fluffy, aromatic rice. It is the last chance for the rice to absorb all that steam so that it is slightly dry, rather than gummy.

How long can you store cooked brown rice?

Let cooked brown rice cool completely before storing it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. To save time for future meals, you can freeze cooked brown rice in individual or family portions in airtight containers or freezer-safe zip-top bags for up to three months.

How do you reheat brown rice?

It is very important to reheat rice to a minimum of 165 degrees Fahrenheit for food safety. You can do this in the microwave: Cover the bowl of rice with a damp paper towel and heat in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until the rice is hot. Alternatively, put the rice in a saucepan, add a few tablespoons water per cup of rice, cover, and heat over medium-low heat until the rice is steaming hot, 5 to 7 minutes.

  • 1 cup

    long-grain or short-grain brown rice

  • 1 Tbsp.

    olive oil or salted butter (optional)

  • 1/4 tsp.

    kosher salt (optional)

Directions

    1. Step 1Place the rice in a fine mesh sieve. Rinse under cold running water, gently swishing with your hands, until the water runs clear. Allow to drain thoroughly.
    2. Step 2In a medium saucepan, combine the rice and oil and salt, if using. For short-grain rice add 1 ¾ cups water; for long-grain rice add 2 cups water.
    3. Step 3Bring the rice to a simmer over medium-low heat. Allow it to simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook until the rice is tender, 35 to 40 minutes.
    4. Step 4 Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the rice to sit, covered, for 10 minutes. (This will allow the water to absorb and help ensure fluffy rice.) Fluff with a fork before serving.
