When it comes to tequila drinks, the first thing that comes to mind is an icy cold margarita. And it’s easy to see why—the popular cocktail can go with all your favorite taco recipes, party dips, and even with pizza! Just ask Ree Drummond who serves a fun variation of Marg-a-Ree-Tas at her pizza shop in Pawhuska. While those are made with cucumbers and mint, other versions she’s tried over the years include strawberry margaritas, watermelon margaritas, and even a spicy jalapeño margarita.

No matter what the flavor might be, there’s one thing that every good margarita needs: tequila. But what’s the best tequila for margaritas? We’ve reached out to Jennifer Edgerton-McGrew, store manager at Tulsa Hills Wine Cellar, for some tips. "When you are mixing a margarita, there is not much point in spending extra money on an aged tequila because the other flavors in the margarita cover up the nuances of the spirit," explains Edgerton-McGrew. That means you don’t have to break the bank to make margaritas for your next backyard cookout. Instead, reach for blanco tequila (sometimes called silver) instead of a reposado or anejo tequila.

Other than looking for a silver tequila, Edgerton-McGrew recommends only picking bottles that are made with 100 percent agave. "Other tequilas use cane sugar and an assortment of additives," which can lead to a "killer hangover," says Edgerton-McGrew. Check out the options ahead, and then use whatever bottle you end up picking to make your favorite margarita recipe. Just make sure you're ready to serve them in some fun margarita glasses!
