Grab your oversized hats and get ready to watch the Kentucky Derby! First held in 1875 and now a longstanding annual tradition, the Derby takes place on the first Saturday of each May. But if you're a long shot from the Bluegrass State, don't worry; you don't have to attend the famous "race for the roses" at Churchill Downs to enjoy the afternoon. Simply prepare a spread of Southern comfort foods, plus a classic mint julep!
This easy cocktail recipe will be a hit for anyone who loves bourbon. It requires just three ingredients (if you don't count the ice): mint, simple syrup, and bourbon! To make this drink like they do at the Derby, grab a wooden muddler to release the aroma from the mint, then serve it up in a traditional silver julep cup—it makes for a cute presentation and keeps your drink ice cold. To truly replicate this signature drink, serve it over a heaping mound of crushed ice with a bouquet of fresh mint. It’s perfect for spring!
Why do you drink mint juleps at the Kentucky Derby?
Mint juleps were a traditional drink in the south long before Derby parties became what they are today. But rumor has it that mint was planted for cocktails at the racetrack back in 1875, and the mint julep became the official drink of the Kentucky Derby in 1938 when julep cups were given out as souvenirs.
What's the difference between a mojito and a mint julep?
They may both be delicious, minty cocktails, but a mojitos is made with rum and contains lime juice while a mint julep is made with bourbon and only requires simple syrup and mint (and of course, crushed ice!) in addition to the liquor.
What food goes with mint juleps?
Any Southern comfort food will pair well with a mint julep. Try pimento cheese, deviled eggs, Kentucky hot browns, and fried chicken. You can even try some Derby day sweets like bourbon balls or Derby pie.
What is the best bourbon for a mint julep?
Mint juleps are primarily made of bourbon, so it's best to select a good one with a flavor you enjoy on its own. Be aware of the proof! Bourbons range from 80 up to 130 proof, which can have quite an impact on your drinking experience! Since there's added sugar in this drink, select a bourbon that's not too sweet, but that highlights other notes, such as vanilla and spice.
Is a mint julep made with peppermint or spearmint?
Mint juleps are traditionally made with spearmint. Rest assured, if you've bought "mint" from the grocery store or even your local garden shop, you most likely bought spearmint as it's the most popular variety!
Ingredients
- 4
sprigs fresh mint
- 1/2 oz.
simple syrup
- 2 1/2 oz.
bourbon
Crushed ice
Directions
- Step 1Remove the leaves from one sprig of mint and place in a mint julep cup or rocks glass with the simple syrup. Using a wooden muddler, gently muddle to release the aroma and flavor of the mint leaves, about 20 seconds.
- Step 2Add the bourbon to the glass, then fill with crushed ice. Stir well to combine, until the sides of the glass are icy, about 20 seconds.
- Step 3Bundle the remaining three sprigs of mint together and slap them on the back of your hand. Stick the mint into the ice to create a mint bouquet on the side of your glass. Drink immediately!
Tip: Simple syrup is 1 part sugar + 1 part water, heated and stirred until the sugar dissolves, then chilled. If you don't feel like making it, you can substitute 1 teaspoon granulated sugar. If you have superfine sugar, even better. It will dissolve much easier when muddled and stirred.
