Do you want to really impress your friends and family with one of the best finger food ideas at this year's Super Bowl party? I present to you: the pepperoni pizza roll. In mere minutes, you can have these cheesy, pepperoni-packed bites assembled and on their way to the oven to get toasty, melty, warm, and delicious. Just use few store-bought shortcuts like store-bought dough, jarred marinara, and pre-sliced cheese and pepperoni. They're quick and easy enough to make for a last-minute pizza night or even an after-school snack.

Do pepperoni pizza rolls require homemade pizza dough?

Put up your mixer! Pack away the yeast! There's no need for homemade pizza dough here if you've got a ball of the store-bought stuff. That said, you can make your own if you enjoy other pizza recipes.

What is the best way to roll pizza rolls?

It may sound complicated but it's not, promise! Think of it like rolling cinnamon rolls: Just lay the four pieces of unwrapped string cheese, end to end, in a line, on a long edge of the dough. Starting on that edge, roll up the entire piece of dough to create one long cylinder of stuffed dough. Then slice 'em, just like you would other pinwheel recipes.

Do you need to grease the baking dish for pizza rolls?

Yes, be sure to give the pan a good spritz with nonstick spray before placing the rolls in it. Or, use a pastry or basting brush to brush some olive or vegetable oil into the bottom and up the sides of the pan.

What other toppings can you use?

You can leave the pepperoni out and keep them wonderfully cheesy or you can lightly top the rolls with ingredients like diced bell pepper, sliced black olives, and crumbled Italian sausage. It's best to wait to top the rolls with these extras until right before they head into the oven.

Can you make pepperoni pizza rolls ahead of time?

These rolls are best enjoyed bubbly, hot, and fresh from the oven, so make them just before serving. Plus, convenience items like store-bought dough and marinara sauce make them a cinch to throw together quickly.

Ingredients

  • 1

ball refrigerated pizza dough (about 14-oz.), at room temperature

  • All-purpose flour, for sprinkling

  • 1/2 cup

marinara sauce, plus more for dipping

  • 1/2 cup

    grated parmesan cheese

  • 1/2 tsp.

    dried oregano

  • 1/2 tsp.

    kosher salt

  • 10

    slices part-skim mozzarella cheese

  • 2 oz.

    sliced pepperoni, divided

  • 4

    sticks mozzarella string cheese

Directions

    1. Step 1Preheat the oven to 400°F.
    2. Step 2On a floured surface, roll out the pizza dough until it's a very flat, large rectangle, about 11 by 18 inches. Spread the dough with the marinara sauce, leaving a 1-inch border all around. Sprinkle on the parmesan, oregano, and salt. Evenly top with the mozzarella slices and half of the pepperoni.
    3. Step 3Unwrap the string cheese and arrange each stick in a line on one long edge of the dough. Starting from that long edge, roll up the dough as tightly as possible so the string cheese winds up in the middle of the roll. Pinch the seam of the dough to seal, then flip seam-side down. Using a serrated knife, slice the roll into 1-inch pieces and place each piece cut-side up in a greased 12-inch round baking dish or cast-iron skillet. Tuck the remaining pepperoni into the folds of the pizza rolls, leaving just a little sticking out. Allow the rolls to rise at room temperature for 20 minutes.
    4. Step 4Bake the rolls until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly, 20 to 25 minutes. Serve with extra marinara sauce for dipping.
