It's time you give lemonade an elegant spin that’s perfect for brunch, parties, or any spring or summer afternoon spent outdoors. Looking to impress your guests? This lavender lemonade is not just pretty to look at, it’s fragrant, refreshing, and the perfect balance between tart and sweet.

Forget the powdered lemonade you may have used as a kid and upgrade to homemade lemonade by making an easy simple syrup. To give the classic drink its unexpected twist, we infused the syrup with dried lavender flowers (the culinary kind that are safe to eat). The end result is a drink with a lightly floral flavor that feels special—without being overwhelming. Combine the syrup with freshly squeezed lemons and sprigs of mint for a lovely drink you’ll be reaching for all summer long.

What is lavender lemonade good for?

We couldn’t think of anything more refreshing than lemonade on a hot summer day. Make this lavender lemonade for a picnic, backyard barbecue, or afternoon on the porch. It’s a non-alcoholic drink that’s perfect for baby showers or sharing with kids. Add a splash of vodka (or any alcohol you prefer) for a fun Mother’s Day or bridal shower cocktail.

How do you make lavender lemonade from scratch?

Lavender lemonade is just as easy to make as regular lemonade as long as you have the right ingredients: lemons (of course), simple syrup, and water. Simple syrup is just a combination of sugar and water that’s been heated up, but we’re adding culinary lavender to give it a hint of floral flavor. To make things even easier, you can make the lavender syrup up to 1 week in advance.

To serve the lavender lemonade, pick out your favorite pitcher and combine the lemon juice, water, and lavender syrup. Add some mint for freshness, then serve over ice with pretty sprigs of lavender. To give the drink a pop of color, add a couple drops of lavender food coloring for a truly purple drink.

Is all lavender edible?

Most types of lavender are edible, but for the best flavor we suggest using dried culinary lavender. It's safe to eat and its lightly floral, sweet, and citrusy flavor means it’s perfect for lemonade. If you have lavender growing in your garden, you can also dry your own lavender flowers. Just be sure that they weren’t sprayed with any chemicals.

Ingredients

Lavender Syrup

  • 1/2 cup

    granulated sugar

  • 4 tsp.

    dried culinary lavender

  • 3

sprigs fresh lavender, plus more for garnish

Lavender Lemonade

  • 2 cups

    freshly squeezed lemon juice

  • 4

    sprigs mint

  • 1 cup

    lavender syrup

  • Lemon slices, for garnish

Directions

    1. Step 1For the lavender syrup: Combine the sugar, 1/2 cup water and the dried and fresh lavender in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a low simmer and stir well until all of the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat, cover and set aside for 1 hour. Strain the lavender and chill the syrup in the refrigerator until ready to use (it can be stored for up to 1 week).
    2. Step 2For the lavender lemonade: In a large pitcher, combine the lemon juice, 4 cups water, fresh mint and lavender syrup.  Stir well to combine. Serve in glasses over ice, with lemon slices and additional sprigs of fresh lavender.

If you love the idea of this lemonade being truly purple, add a drop or two of lavender food coloring before serving.
