One of the easiest classic cocktails, a Negroni calls for equals parts gin, red vermouth, and Campari simply stirred together, then served over ice with an orange peel twist. The Negroni cocktail is said to have originated in Florence, Italy and is known as an "aperitivo," or drink to have before dinner.

What is the best vermouth for a Negroni cocktail?

Vermouth is a fortified wine that contains a variety of botanicals, herbs, and spices, as well as a neutral alcohol like clear brandy. That said, the vermouth you choose to use for your Negroni cocktail is personal—try a few and see what you like. We recommend Carpano Antico (an Italian red vermouth), Martini & Rossi (slightly sweeter), or Dolin Rouge (drier).

What is the difference between an Americano and a Negroni?

An Americano cocktail is very similar to a Negroni, only with club soda instead of gin. Overall, an Americano provides all of the great flavors of a Negroni but is better suited for daytime sipping because of its light flavor and lower alcohol content.

What is the best gin for a Negroni?

Campari and red vermouth both add strong bitter fruit and botanical flavors to the Negroni. Like vermouth, different types of gin can also have varying herbal notes. A straightforward gin may be your best bet, so as to not compete with the other components of the drink. Beefeater London Dry and Tanqueray No. 10. are both smooth, dry gins with notes of juniper and citrus, which go nicely with both the red vermouth and Campari.

Can you make a Negroni without Campari?

Other bitter, red aperitifs exist, such as the slightly sweeter, less alcoholic Aperol or American-made Capelletti. (But many would insist that a Negroni must use Campari!) We would also say that sipping this drink alongside a bowl of olives and some salty potato chips is a must.
