You’ve planned your 4th of July menu and decked out your yard with festive decor, but no Independence Day party would be complete without a refreshing 4th of July drink (and some fireworks, of course!). This red, white and blue cocktail is inspired by a summery twist on the margarita made with tequila and fresh watermelon—and is the perfect way to toast to America’s birthday.
Every good marg has a hint of sweetness, so we're using red grenadine in place of simple syrup to give our drink its rich, red color. Instead of the typical salted rim, these glasses are dipped in a mixture of blue sanding sugar and kosher salt, for an extra bit of salty-sweetness with every sip. Then, add a special garnish of white melon stars on a skewer (another patriotic nod to the holiday). Pro tip: Make a few extra using small star-shaped cookie cutters to snack on later!

Ingredients
- 4 cups
diced watermelon (about 1½ lbs)
- 8 oz.
tequila blanco
- 1/3 cup
lime juice, plus 1 lime wedge
- 3 Tbsp.
grenadine
- 1/4 cup
blue sanding sugar
- 1 tsp.
kosher salt
- 4
½ -inch thick slices honeydew melon
Crushed ice, for serving
Directions
- Step 1Place the diced watermelon in a blender. Blend just until it breaks down into a liquid, 20 to 30 seconds. Strain through a fine mesh strainer. Stir together the watermelon juice, tequila, lime juice and grenadine.
- Step 2On a small plate, combine the blue sanding sugar and kosher salt. Run the lime wedge around the rims of the glasses. Dip the rims into the sugar-salt mixture.
- Step 3With a small star cutter, cut the honeydew melon into star shapes. Slide 2 to 3 stars each onto 4 wooden skewers.
- Step 4Carefully fill each glass three-quarters full with crushed ice. Add the watermelon margarita to the glasses and garnish with a skewer of melon stars. Serve immediately.
If you like, you can strain the blended watermelon juice through a mesh strainer lined with a single paper towel. It takes a couple of extra minutes to for the juice to drain, but helps to remove every last bit of pulp.
