You can even get the kids involved for a fun Halloween activity that doubles as making dinner! How do you make mummy hot dogs?
It's simple! Cut crescent dough into long strips, then grab a hot dog, place a cheese stick beneath it, and begin wrapping the dough around both. Wrap about three strips of dough around each hot dog to give them a mummy appearance. Pop them in the oven to bake until golden brown, then let them cool for a few minutes. The final step is adding the mustard "eyes!"
What kind of cheese goes on mummy hot dogs?
This recipe calls for pepper jack cheese for a subtle kick, but you can use classic cheddar instead. You can even leave out the cheese if you like.
Help, I can't find a crescent roll sheet!
Don't fret! It's a new Pillsbury product that can be harder to find. And while it certainly makes cutting the strips easier, the mummies will be just as delicious if you use traditional (perforated) crescent dough. Instead of separating the dough into triangles, carefully unroll it into one large sheet, pinching together the perforations gently.
Can you use puff pastry for mummy dogs?
Sure! It creates flakier "bandages" that are buttery and delicious! Be sure to thaw the puff pastry according to package directions and increase the oven temperature to 400 degrees for baking.
What hot dogs are best for mummy dogs?
Although chicken sausage and "gourmet" hot dogs from specialty meats are certainly delicious, good ol' regular, slender beef or pork hot dogs are best for this recipe. Jumbo hot dogs or thick sausage take a little longer to heat through, so stick to the classic hot dog for this recipe.
Can I make the mummies ahead of time?
Once rolled, mummy hot dogs must be baked right away. It's key for clearly defined "bandages." Baked mummy hot dogs can be reheated in a 375-degree oven until warmed through, three to five minutes.
Ingredients
- 8 oz.
crescent roll sheet (or crescent roll dough)
- 8
hot dogs
- 2
thick slices pepper jack cheese
Nonstick spray
Yellow or honey mustard, for serving
Directions
- Step 1Preheat the oven to 375°F. Open and unroll the crescent roll sheet onto a cutting board, with the long side facing you. Cut 1/4- to 1/2-inch wide strips cross-wise (or across the short side—you need 24 strips total).
- Step 2Cut each slice of cheese into 4 long rectangles. Wrap one piece of cheese underneath one hot dog. Start with one strip of dough and wrap it around the cheese and hot dog like a mummy bandage. Continue with two more strips, pressing the end of the last strip together with the start of a new strip. Place cheese-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and spray with nonstick spray. Repeat with all of the remaining hot dogs.
- Step 3Bake for 12 to 14 minutes, until golden brown. Let cool for 5 minutes before adding two little dots of mustard as eyes. Serve immediately.
