Looking to ring in the New Year with something bubbly? We sure enjoy a champagne cocktail but can’t deny our love for the perfect margarita, too. Enter: the Sparkling Margarita! This New Year’s cocktail combines a tart, limey margarita with all of the bubbles you need for a proper midnight toast.

What is sparkling margarita made of?

A sparkling margarita starts with a base of a classic margarita: tequila, lime juice and triple sec, shaken over ice. You can add a drop of sweetener if you like (simple syrup or agave nectar both work) but it's not entirely necessary for this cocktail. The sparkling wine helps to mellow out of the tartness of the lime juice.

What is a good sparkling wine?

You can certainly use champagne for this drink, though a less expensive sparkling wine, such as prosecco or cava, works just as well. You can use a dry or sweeter sparkling wine, often labelled “brut” or “sec” respectively, based on your taste.

Do I have to use sparkling wine?

Sparkling wine adds a fun twist (and a bit more alcohol!) to this drink, but other cocktail toppers can be substituted for a bubbly finish. Soda water or club soda is good, neutral addition when you are just looking for bubbles. Ginger beer, or even citrus soda like Sprite, 7UP or Fresca, add sweetness and another layer of flavor.
