Why is air fryer chicken parmesan great?
This air fryer chicken recipe tops regular chicken parmesan, because it delivers super-crispy, parmesan-crusted chicken cutlets with no frying, very little mess, and in a fraction of the time as stovetop and conventional oven versions.
What is an air fryer?
An air fryer is a handy kitchen gadget that works like a mini convection oven. It uses its small size, high heat, and a powerful fan to cook food fast (and get it nice and crispy!) without using a lot of oil. The circulating hot air, combined with the perforated rack, helps create the "fried" effect in an air fryer recipe.
How do you make chicken cutlets?
While you can find cutlets at most grocery stores, they're just as easy to make yourself. Start with a full-sized chicken breast. Lay it flat on a cutting board. Hold a knife in your preferred cutting hand. With your other hand, press the chicken flat. Keeping your knife level and parallel to the cutting board, carefully slice the chicken breast in half horizontally.
Should you put raw chicken in an air fryer?
Yes, putting raw chicken in an air fryer is perfectly safe as long as you cook it through. These thin cutlets only take about 15 minutes total until they're golden brown, crispy, and done to perfection.
How do you get the breading to stick to chicken parmesan?
This recipe calls for dredging the chicken in flour, then coating in egg, and then breadcrumbs. The initial flour coating provides a dry surface for the egg to stick to. Then, the breadcrumbs stick to the egg. Each step makes a big difference in a breading that sticks to the chicken.

Ingredients
- 2
boneless skinless chicken breasts, halved horizontally (or 4 cutlets)
- 1 tsp.
salt
- 1/2 tsp.
ground black pepper
- 1/3 cup
all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp.
garlic powder
- 2
large eggs, lightly beaten
- 1/2 cup
panko breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup
ground parmesan cheese
- 1 Tbsp.
Italian seasoning
Nonstick cooking spray
- 1 cup
marinara sauce
- 4
slices mozzarella cheese (about 4 oz.)
Chopped fresh basil, to serve
Directions
- Step 1Season the chicken pieces on both sides with salt and pepper. Set aside.
- Step 2In a shallow bowl, stir together the flour and garlic powder. To a second shallow bowl, add the eggs. In a third shallow bowl, stir together the panko, parmesan, and Italian seasoning.
- Step 3Working with 1 piece of chicken at a time, dredge the chicken in the flour, dip in the egg, then coat in the panko mixture, pressing as needed. Repeat until all of the chicken pieces are breaded. Spray the breaded chicken with nonstick cooking spray on all sides.
- Step 4Place the chicken pieces in a single layer in the air fryer basket, with about 1/2 inch of space between them. Cook in the air fryer set at 375°F for 6 minutes. Flip and continue to cook for 6 minutes more.
- Step 5Open the air fryer basket, and spoon about 2 tablespoons of marinara onto each piece of chicken. Top each with one mozzarella slice. Return to the air fryer, and cook until cheese is golden brown and bubbly, about 3 minutes. Top with basil.
Tip: Finely ground store-bought Parmesan cheese is best for this recipe—it needs to be light and powdery so that it sticks to the chicken cutlets.
