There are few things more refreshing than a chilled slice of watermelon on a hot, summer day. In addition to making an incredible watermelon salad or watermelon pico de gallo, it serves as the perfect main ingredient for this refreshing, yet fulfilling watermelon smoothie. With the addition of frozen strawberries and Greek vanilla yogurt, it's the perfect healthy breakfast idea or midday summer snack!

Is it okay to blend watermelon?

Yes! When blended, watermelon breaks down into a super refreshing fruit juice with no other liquid added. (This is a great trick for making watermelon margaritas!) The resulting juice is perfect for adding a hint of natural sweetness to the puree.

What fruit mixes well with watermelon?

There are so many different fruits that pair well with watermelon. Red fruits like strawberries, cherries, and raspberries will complement its slightly sweet flavors and keep your smoothie a vibrant pink color. Other tropical fruits like mango, pineapple, or kiwi also mix well and add both sweetness and acidity. Fresh herbs like mint or basil or even a cucumber, can also add a savory edge to this drink. (Fun fact: Both watermelon and cucumbers are members of the "cucurbit" family, which are actually fruits!)

How do you make a smoothie with watermelon?

For this simple watermelon smoothie, combine diced watermelon with frozen strawberries, a few ice cubes, and vanilla Greek yogurt in a blender. Then simply blend until smooth. You may need to stop the blender to push the watermelon down into the bottom of the canister. Once the watermelon starts to break down, the whole smoothie will come together.

  • 1 cup

    frozen strawberries

  • 3

    large ice cubes

  • 1

    5.3-oz. container vanilla Greek yogurt

  • 1/2

    banana

  • 1/2

    lime, juiced

Directions

    1. Step 1Combine the watermelon, strawberries, ice cubes, yogurt, banana, and lime juice in a blender. Frozen cherries or raspberries make a nice swap for the frozen strawberries!
