Sit, Fido—this puppy chow is for humans only! Though it may take its name from the popular dog food, this puppy chow (aka muddy buddies) is much more delicious! Like your favorite savory Chex party mix combined with the best chocolate desserts, this eat-it-by-the-handful snack makes a great anytime treat, but it's also the perfect as a tailgate food, homemade Halloween treat, or Christmas food gift during the holiday season.

Why is it called puppy chow?

This recipe got its unfortunate nickname for its resemblance to the popular brand of dog food. Unappealing as it may sound, this sweet and crunchy snack is an easy no-bake dessert.

What's in puppy chow?

In this recipe, a mixture of chocolate chips, peanut butter, and salted butter get melted together then poured over corn Chex cereal. After it's thoroughly stirred together and the cereal is evenly coated with the chocolate mixture, it gets added to a bag with powdered sugar and shaken until it's completely coated.

How can I customize this puppy chow recipe?

Puppy chow is easy to customize: You can use rice, corn, or wheat Chex cereal, or a combination of all three! Use your favorite brand of peanut butter, but stick to creamy versions and avoid natural nut butters that can separate a room temperature. Switch out the chocolate chips with your favorite type of chocolate, such as milk chocolate or white chocolate.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup

    bittersweet chocolate chips

  • 2/3 cup

    creamy peanut butter

  • 1/4 cup

    salted butter

  • 1

    12-0z. box corn Chex cereal

  • 2 cups

    powdered sugar

Directions

    1. Step 1Combine chocolate chips, peanut butter, and salted butter in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 30 seconds; stir, then microwave for 30 seconds more. Stir until smooth.
    2. Step 2Add cereal to a large bowl. Pour chocolate mixture over cereal; stir gently until cereal is thoroughly coated.
    3. Step 3Add coated cereal and powdered sugar to a large resealable plastic bag. Seal bag, and shake until cereal is coated. Serve immediately, or store in an airtight container up to 1 week.

For a flavorful twist, make Double-Chocolate Peanut Puppy Chow: Keep the chocolate chips and butter the same, but use 2/3 cup Nutella (chocolate-hazelnut spread) and 1/3 cup peanut butter. Pour the melted mixture over the cereal, then add to the bag with 2 cups honey-roasted peanuts and 3 cups powdered sugar. Toss and enjoy!
