To all the chocoholics out there: this ultimate chocolate milkshake is for you. Whether it’s a late-night craving, a tasty complement to salty fries, or a cooling solace on a hot day, milkshakes are a comforting, underrated beverage that can be greatly improved at home. Some chocolate milkshakes out there are downright heartbreaking, with a freezer-burned, icy consistency or not enough chocolate flavor (gasp!). Never fear, this chocolate dessert is chock-full of refreshing, chocolaty goodness to the very last drop!

What is in a chocolate milkshake?

Crammed with as many chocolaty ingredients as possible, this shake is a rich blend of chocolate ice cream, chocolate milk, and chocolate syrup. Most recipes stop there, however, for an even more chocolaty oomph, this shake is topped with a swirl of cocoa whipped cream. A drizzle of chocolate syrup, a few shavings of dark chocolate, and/or a dash of chocolate sprinkles and this shake is sure to compete with local ice cream shops for the most devilishly decadent chocolate milkshake.

Can you make a chocolate milkshake without a blender?

Don’t have a blender? No worries! A little bit of elbow grease and you’ll have a smooth, sippable milkshake in no time. Simply add the ice cream, milk, and syrup to a large mixing bowl. With a whisk or rubber spatula, combine all the ingredients until the milk is incorporated and the mixture is smooth. Spoon the mixture into a cup and enjoy!

What is the difference between a milkshake and a frappé?

A milkshake is a blended or shaken frothy drink made of milk, ice cream, and flavorings. A frappé is a dessert made of partially frozen liquids such as fruit juice or a drink made of a liquid poured over shaved ice. Starbucks famously made their rich and creamy frappuccinos with the latter method by blending coffee, milk, and flavorings with crushed ice.

For the chocolate whipped cream:

  • 1 cup

    heavy whipping cream, cold

  • 5 Tbsp.

    confectioner's sugar

  • 3 Tbsp.

    cocoa powder, sifted

For the chocolate milkshake:

  • 2 pt.

    chocolate ice cream

  • 1/3 cup

    chocolate milk

  • 3 Tbsp.

chocolate syrup, plus more for drizzling

  • Chocolate sprinkles, to serve

  • Chocolate shavings, to serve

Directions

    1. Step 1For the chocolate whipped cream: In a large bowl, combine the heavy cream, confectioner's sugar, and cocoa powder. Using an electric mixer, beat on medium-high speed until stiff peaks form, 2 to 4 minutes. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
    2. Step 2For the chocolate milkshake: Place 2 (12-ounce) footed milkshake glasses in the freezer to chill for 15 minutes before serving.
    3. Step 3To a countertop blender, add the ice cream, chocolate milk, and chocolate syrup. Blend until very smooth.
    4. Step 4Drizzle the insides of the chilled glasses with chocolate syrup.
    5. Step 5Divide the milkshake among the prepared glasses and top with chocolate whipped cream, more chocolate syrup, and chocolate sprinkles or shavings.

Tip: Regular milk and vanilla ice cream can be substituted. Add 1 or 2 more tablespoons of syrup to keep the chocolatey flavor!
