Whether you’re starting the day with a bang or are in need of a “hair of the dog” brunch cocktail, this zesty Bloody Maria is here to help. It is not only one of the easiest cocktails to mix up, this big batch beverage makes enough for a few guests. Much like the ever-popular Bloody Mary, the Bloody Maria begs for customization with toppings and spice level. Setting up a Bloody Maria bar is a fun way for brunch guests to add all their favorite fixings to their morning elixir!

What is the difference between a Bloody Mary and a Bloody Maria?

While these drinks have a similar base of vegetable or tomato juice, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, horseradish, celery salt, and black pepper, a Bloody Mary contains vodka while the Bloody Maria switches it up with tequila and some lime juice.

How do you garnish a Bloody Maria?

This recipe calls for a simple garnish of olives, pickled peppers, lime, and celery with a chili-lime salt rim. But as the internet has shown, the topping potential for a Bloody Mary and a Bloody Maria is truly endless. Beyond the olives and limes, this cocktail would be over-the-top tasty with cooked shrimp, cheese, crispy bacon, other pickled vegetables, and of course, extra hot sauce.

What kind of tequila goes into a Bloody Maria?

Because this drink is so strongly flavored, a blanco or silver tequila is perfect. No need to invest in an expensive, aged reposado or anejo tequila. Just make sure to get a bottle that’s made with agave!

Ingredients

  • 1

46-ounce bottle vegetable juice or tomato juice

  • 2 1/2 cups

    silver tequila

  • 1/3 cup

    fresh lemon juice

  • 1/3 cup

    fresh lime juice

  • 1/4 cup

    Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 Tbsp.

    horseradish

  • 2 tsp.

    hot sauce (optional)

  • 1 tsp.

    celery salt

  • 1/2 tsp.

    ground black pepper

  • 1/4 cup

chili lime seasoning, such as Tajin

  • 2

    limes, cut into wedges

  • Ice

  • Leafy celery stalks, green olives, pickled peppers, to serve

Directions

    1. Step 1In a large pitcher, combine the vegetable juice, tequila, lemon juice, lime juice, Worcestershire sauce, horseradish, hot sauce, if using, celery salt, and black pepper. Taste for seasoning. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
    2. Step 2Place the chili lime seasoning in a shallow dish. Use a lime wedge to wet the rim of a tall glass, then dip the rim in the chili lime seasoning. Fill the glass with ice and pour in the Bloody Maria. Serve with celery, olives, pickled peppers, and lime wedges.

Tip: For a single Bloody Maria, follow the Bloody Mary recipe but replace the vodka with tequila and add a squeeze of lime.
