Experience a whirlwind of flavor with a fruity and boozy hurricane cocktail. This sweet drink, made with rum, passion fruit juice, citrus juice, and vibrantly colored grenadine, is one of the most popular cocktails offered up and down Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Much like a Tom Collins, this drink is lucky enough to have a special serving glass named after it! It's the perfect way to celebrate Mardi Gras, but it would be just as welcome as a refreshing, tropical poolside sip.
What is the difference between a hurricane and a daiquiri?
In its simplest form, a daiquiri is a shaken and strained rum cocktail made with light rum, citrus juice, and sugar. This combination is very similar to the 18th century sailer’s grog, mixed up with plenty of citrus to prevent scurvy! The core concept has been played around with, adding fruit juices, serving it in a big cup on the rocks, or serving it blended. A hurricane is considered a spin on a classic daiquiri, with two different types of rum and passion fruit juice, syrup, or puree being key ingredients.
Can a hurricane cocktail be made ahead?
As with most shaken beverages, this should not be made ahead. You can, however, make this into a batch mix cocktail that will serve 4 guests (double it for 8, and so on). Because fresh citrus batch cocktails should be consumed promptly, only mix this up one day in advance.
1 cup light rum (8 oz.)
1 cup dark rum (8 oz.)
1 cup passion fruit juice (8 oz.)
½ cup fresh orange juice (4 oz.)
½ cup fresh lime juice (4 oz.)
½ cup pineapple juice (4 oz.)
¼ cup grenadine (2 oz.)
Combine all the ingredients and store the mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When cocktail hour rolls around, pour a little over 1 cup of the mixture into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake, strain, and serve!
