This mistletoe martini is an elegant addition to any holiday celebration. The cocktail recipe starts with a vodka and cranberry base and gets a refined floral touch from elderflower liqueur, which adds subtle hints of pear and tropical fruit. The balance of tart and sweet in this martini recipe makes it especially easy to sip, and the garnish—fresh cranberries and mint leaves easily assembled to look like holly—is a delightful nod to the season. There’s no prettier Christmas cocktail for a festive toast!

What is elderflower liquor?

Elderflower liqueur is a sweet, floral spirit made from elderflower blossoms. With delicate notes of pear, lychee, and tropical fruit, it is often used to add aromatic sweetness to cocktails.

What do you serve with a mistletoe martini?

This refreshing cocktail pairs well with savory party bites like bruschetta with goat cheese, cranberry brie bites, and fig-prosciutto pizza. For a sweet touch, try serving the martini with lemon shortbread cookies, cranberry streusel bars, or dark chocolate truffles. A festive Christmas charcuterie board also makes a great match!

What can you do with leftover simple syrup?

Many cocktails call for simple syrup instead of granulated sugar because it dissolves quickly and there is no gritty residue left at the bottom of the glass. Think of it as a do-anything sweetener for any kind of drink, from iced coffee and sweet tea to a French 75 and lemon drop martini. It will keep in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 1 month.

What other garnishes can you use for a mistletoe martini?

Feel free to skip the toothpicks and cranberries and keep it simple by floating a mint leaf in your drink. Or just garnish with a lemon peel.

Ingredients

Simple Syrup

  • 1 cup

    granulated sugar

Mistletoe Martini

  • 4

    fresh cranberries

  • 6

    fresh mint leaves

  • 2 oz.

    cranberry juice cocktail

  • 2 oz.

    vodka

  • 1 oz.

elderflower liqueur (such as St. Germain)

  • 1 oz.

    fresh lemon juice

Directions

    1. Step 1For the simple syrup: In a small saucepan, whisk together the sugar and 1 cup water over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is completely dissolved, 2 to 3 minutes. The syrup should be clear, not cloudy. Remove from the heat and let cool completely, about 1 hour on the counter or 30 minutes in the refrigerator. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to use.
    2. Step 2For the mistletoe martini: To make the garnish, thread a toothpick with 1 cranberry, 3 mint leaves, and a second cranberry, fanning the mint leaves out. Repeat with a second toothpick and the remaining cranberries and mint.
    3. Step 3Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Add the cranberry juice cocktail, vodka, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, and 1 ounce simple syrup (reserve the remaining syrup for another use). Cover and shake vigorously until cold, 10 to 20 seconds. Strain into 2 martini or coupe glasses and garnish with the cranberry and mint picks.

Tip: The simple syrup can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a month.
