Steak night is always a happy night around here, and this skillet supper brings the kind of bold, buttery flavor that gets everyone to the table fast. The steak is basted in a rich garlic butter-soy glaze with a splash of mirin, and it's all topped off with a hearty drizzle of creamy yum yum sauce. Never tried it? You're in for a treat. It's that tangy, slightly sweet sauce made from mayo, ketchup, vinegar, and seasonings like paprika and garlic that you'll find at hibachi-style steakhouses. Served with sizzling stir fried vegetables, this steak dinner checks all the boxes: quick, tasty, and fun!

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lb.
boneless sirloin or strip steak
- 1 1/2 tsp.
kosher salt
- 1/2 tsp.
black pepper
- 4 Tbsp.
salted butter, at room temperature
- 4
garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 2 Tbsp.
vegetable oil
- 2 Tbsp.
mirin or dry sherry
- 1/4 cup
low-sodium soy sauce
- 2
medium zucchini, cut into 2-inch sticks
- 1
sweet onion, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 lb.
cremini mushrooms, quartered
Steamed white rice, for serving
bottled yum yum sauce, for serving
Directions
- Step 1About 30 minutes before cooking, remove the steak from the refrigerator and pat dry with paper towels. Season with 1 teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper.
- Step 2Mix together the butter and garlic in a small bowl.
- Step 3Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steak and cook until well browned, 4 to 5 minutes per side for medium. During the last minute of cooking, pour the mirin and 2 tablespoons of the soy sauce over the steak, then dollop with half of the garlic butter. Remove to a cutting board and let rest for 10 minutes. Wipe out the skillet.
- Step 4Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in the same skillet over medium-high heat. Add the zucchini, onion, mushrooms, and remaining ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper and cook, tossing occasionally, until the vegetables begin to turn golden brown, 6 to 8 minutes. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons soy sauce and garlic butter and toss to coat.
- Step 5Slice the steak against the grain. Serve the steak and vegetables over rice and top with yum yum sauce.
