Shrimp dip is a classic appetizer that's been making its way to the table for years, but never gets old! This version has all the familiar flavors you've come to love, but with a few fresh swaps that make all the difference. Instead of canned shrimp, this party dip is made with fresh cooked shrimp, plus, it's filled with lots of bright herbs and topped with tangy cocktail sauce. It also just so happens to be one of the easiest appetizers you'll ever make!
What's in shrimp dip?
This shrimp dip recipe starts with a base of cream cheese which is lightened with some mayonnaise to keep it soft and spreadable. Mix in lemon zest and juice, scallions, and parsley for brightness, then top with a layer of cocktail sauce if you like. Cocktail sauce is optional; a sprinkle of fresh herbs also makes a delicious topping!
What size shrimp do you need for shrimp dip?
Any size of shrimp will work for this recipe. Cook the shrimp according to package directions and chop it into small pieces. Tiny salad shrimp also work well and eliminate the need for chopping.
Can you use canned shrimp?
Canned shrimp also work well for this recipe. But because the canned variety tend to be packed in a seasoned brined, it's best to drain the shrimp from the brine, rinse, and pat dry before mixing into the dip.
What do you serve with shrimp dip?
Any sort of sturdy cracker works well for shrimp dip. You can also serve it with crudités, a medley of sliced veggies like celery, cucumber, carrots, or any you like.
How long does shrimp dip last?

(8-oz.) packages cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup
mayonnaise
- 1 tsp.
lemon zest
- 1 Tbsp.
lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp.
salt
- 3
green onions, thinly sliced
- 1 Tbsp.
chopped parsley, plus more to serve
- 8 oz.
cooked shrimp
- 1 cup
cocktail sauce
Crackers, to serve
Directions
- Step 1In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the cream cheese, mayonnaise, lemon zest and juice, and salt. Beat on medium speed until completely smooth, about 1 minute. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula, then add the green onion and parsley. Mix on low speed just until combined.
- Step 2Remove the shells and tails from the shrimp (if necessary) and chop into small pieces.
- Step 3Use a rubber spatula to fold the shrimp into the dip. Transfer to a shallow, wide serving bowl and smooth into an even layer. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour or up to overnight.
- Step 4Top with cocktail sauce and parsley, and serve with crackers.
Tip: Swap the shrimp for eight ounces of chopped, smoked salmon for a breakfast bagel spread.
