When Ree Drummond's daughter, Alex Drummond Scott, found out she was having a girl, she immediately had a vision for the nursery: pink! "I love all things pink, so I knew I was going to want to incorporate a lot of it," says Alex. "I'm also really drawn to florals and bows, which are kind of a big trend right now."
She and her husband, Mauricio Scott, posted a sweet gender reveal on Instagram in June to the tune of "My Girl" as George bit into a cupcake with pink filling. Soon after, the couple jumped into turning their guest room into a nursery in their Dallas home, where they've lived since they got married in 2021.
They had their work cut out for them: Everything in the room needed to go, down to the dingy carpeting that was there when they moved in. Thankfully, the room already had a good-sized closet to hold all the baby stuff from grandma Ree. As Ree has confessed, "I've been buying ridiculously adorable onesies for our future granddaughter. Look out, Ladd! A whole new column of monthly spending has been created!"
Take a peek at how the nursery came together here. (Psst—If you look closely, you'll spot the cutest detail personalized with the baby's name!)
As Mauricio was working on some renovations, Alex popped in for "moral support" then decided to relax on the plush new carpet from Mohawk. "It's so soft... the lower back pain has commenced!" Alex announced in her Instagram video while George chilled nearby. "I keep telling him that his little sister is going to be in here," she noted, "but I don't think he understands!"
The wallpaper is a grasscloth mural from Anthropologie with big white blossoms, blue birds, lemons, and rolling hills at the base. The print is sweet and serene, but it's also sophisticated enough to grow with Alex and Mauricio's daughter past the baby stage. Drapes with blue stripes from Loom Decor balance all the pink in the room.
Alex had the pink pillow made at Fireflies Nursery Linens, and the blue pillow is from a local store, Quatrine Home. "One of the most common baby recommendations I got was to invest in a comfortable glider rocker, since I will be spending so much time there," says Alex. This one is from Namesake Home and, like the ottoman, it's made from recycled plastic bottles.
"I plan to read books to my daughter," says Alex, who got a collection going with her childhood favorites. "The Giving Tree was the book I always wanted my mom to read; it still makes me cry." She included other classics like The Velveteen Rabbit and Dr. Seuss's Oh The Places You'll Go. "We also have baby bibles and books of bible stories, I'm excited to read those as well." Mauricio put up the shelves from Pottery Barn Kids; Alex, like her mother, loves a scalloped edge!
Alex picked white furniture from Pottery Barn Kids with a retro-glam vibe including the crib, this dresser (it's on the opposite wall) and a bowed mirror that Mauricio hung. She added more scalloped touches with the floor lamp and basket. "I'm not dreading diaper changes," says Alex. Unlike burping, which she's tried her hand at with George, "I haven't practiced much, but I feel like it's one of those things we will get the hang of with trial and error---along with everything else!"
Alex topped the dresser with a pair of little pink cowboy boots. "Our friends gifted us the boots when we found out we were having a girl, and we thought they were so precious we wanted them to have a prominent spot in the room," says Alex. The bonnet and holder are from The Beaufort Bonnet Company.
Alex got another bow fix with the Pottery Barn Kids chandelier: The antique gold bows are "tied" to the candelabra lights.
This nursery had to include adorable animals and Alex loves the plush rocking horse, a gift from Sofia's great-grandmother, Patsy. The stuffed toys are a work in progress, though one thing's for sure: There will be many, because Alex adored them as a tot. "I look back at pictures of myself, and I was always carrying a stuffed animal," she says. She already has the perfect one, a basset hound. "He looks like my childhood dog, Charlie," she says. "We're getting a lot as gifts. It'll be fun to show our daughter this one came from grandma, this one came from your great-grandmother!"
"I'm really excited to be a dad, especially to a little girl," says Mauricio. "I can't wait to take her everywhere with us and show her all kinds of fun places and adventures. It will be a blast!"
Ree and Ladd are also gearing up for the big arrival. "My mom loves newborn babies," says Alex. "And my dad will just be excited for the day she's old enough for him to throw her on a horse!" For her part, Alex is just excited to meet her. "I want to take her everywhere—out to dinner with us, shopping in the grocery store. And I look forward to all of the sweet memories we will make in this nursery."
