Hiking is one of the best ways to enjoy nature and get some exercise with friends and family. There are endless destinations across the country to explore, with many state and national parks offering a broad network of well-marked trails. Whether you're heading out for just a few hours (that's what Ree would do—she loves a nice, long walk!) or embarking on a week-long journey, packing the proper hiking essentials is critical for a safe and enjoyable adventure.

There are a few pieces of equipment that you should carry or wear every time you hit the trail. Some things will seem obvious, like a great pair of the best hiking boots or a reusable water bottle. Other supplies, like a headlamp or whistle, may not come to mind right away—but they're just as important as wearing the right footwear and staying hydrated.

Experienced hikers with hundreds of miles under their belts boots will tell you to expect the unexpected, and they're right. When things go wrong in the wild, having simple gear like a compass, raincoat, and multi-tool on hand could mean the difference between a minor inconvenience and a dangerous situation.

Fill your backpack with these hiking essentials and then—well, take a hike!
