Pothos have been a favorite low-maintenance houseplant forever. Your grandmother probably even grew these handsome vining plants! The reason? Pothos are one of the easiest plants to grow indoors. They have glossy heart-shaped leaves on cascading stems, and they look amazing in hanging baskets or when tumbling over the edges of end tables or open shelves. They’ll also happily grow up a moss-covered pole or trellis.

Interestingly, there’s some confusion about what plants actually fall into the pothos category. That’s why we’ve rounded up the best types of pothos that you can grow at home. The common and popular golden pothos (Epipremnum aureum) was once categorized botanically as Scindapsus aureus, which is why Scindapsus plants (which also typically have heart-shaped leaves and a vining habit) often are lumped into the pothos category, too. “'Pothos' is a common name, so it's really just a nickname, not a true botanical classification,” says Justin Hancock, horticulturalist with Costa Farms. “But these plants are close relatives, and because they have similar appearances, Scindapsus plants often are marketed as different types of pothos."

No matter which type of pothos you choose, these plants can all thrive in many different settings from living rooms to bathrooms. They’ll grow quickly in high light, but they tolerate medium or low light levels, and they’ll also do well under LED grow lights. The most important thing to remember is that pothos do not like to stay soggy; let the top few inches of soil dry out before watering again. And, if they become a little overgrown (they can go crazy in the right environment!), prune as needed. But save the pieces: It’s super-easy to propagate new pothos plants!
