Some people love including their dogs in family meals, but before you pass the pasta, there are a few important things to consider. Can dogs eat pasta? What about pasta sauce? And how much is too much? To help answer these questions, veterinary expert Dr. Dwight Andrew Alleyne shares insights on what’s safe for your pup and what’s best left on your plate. Let’s dig in and find out if pasta night can be dog-friendly!

Can dogs eat pasta?

The answer is yes, but with a few important stipulations. “Dogs can eat plain pasta in moderation as along as it doesn't contain any harmful ingredients such as garlic, onions, or excessive salt,” says Dr. Alleyne, a small animal veterinarian in private practice in Georgia. Keep in mind, the key word here is plain. Any kind of seasoned pasta is off-limits, as certain ingredients can be toxic to dogs.

Can dogs eat pasta sauce?

Pasta sauce is where things get tricky. “Pasta sauce is not recommended for dogs since it often contains harmful ingredients such as garlic, onions, spices, or sugar,” explains Dr. Alleyne. Garlic and onions contain a compound called allium, which is toxic to dogs and can cause symptoms like vomiting or even red blood cell damage. Plus, many sauces are high in sugar and sodium, which aren’t great for your pup’s health. If you’re sharing pasta, it’s best to skip the sauce altogether and serve it plain.

How much pasta is too much for dogs?

A few bites of plain pasta are unlikely to cause harm, but larger portions can lead to digestive upset or weight gain. Dogs don’t process carbs like we do, so too much can cause bloating, gas, or even pancreatitis. Dr. Alleyne explains, “Since pasta is a carbohydrate-rich food, it should only be given in very small amounts and never as a substitute for a full meal. Large amounts of pasta can increase the likelihood of obesity, diabetes, or other diet sensitivities.” If you’re using pasta as a treat, stick to under a tablespoon for small dogs or no more than 1/4 cup for larger breeds.

Does pasta have any health benefits for dogs?

"Pasta doesn't offer much in the way of health benefits for dogs," says Dr. Alleyne. "It's sometimes described as an empty carbohydrate source. At best, it can provide some energy, but other nutrient sources are much more beneficial for overall health."

While not harmful in small amounts, pasta is far from a superfood. Dogs thrive on diets rich in proteins and fats, so for more nutritious treat options, lean meats, veggies, or dog-safe fruits are better choices.
