Taylor Sheridan doesn't sleep: unconfirmed, but likely. How else could he produce some of the best television in the modern day?
No one really knows how he does it, but the TV genius is releasing new shows left and right, each one captivating audiences like never before. So naturally, everyone expects the same with his upcoming Western drama, Landman—another show that fans of Yellowstone and its many prequels, sequels, and spinoffs should keep on their radar.
Landman is a series based on a popular podcast about the oil industry in West Texas with a star-studded cast, including Academy Award-winner Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, and Jon Hamm. The upcoming series will explore every fiery aspect of the business, along with all the twists, turns, and turmoil that comes with it.
The show officially began filming in the area of Fort Worth, Texas, in February and is set to hit TV screens this fall. But before that, there's a whole lot more to unpack. So, read on for everything we know about the first season of Landman.
What will Landman season 1 be about?
Based off the podcast, Boomtown, the show is a modern-day retelling of the booming interest of Texas' oil rigs, and how "roughnecks and wildcat billionaires" remodeled the economy (for better or for worse).
Unlike Sheridan's previous works, no cowboys on the ranch here. "It's more in the world of oil," Hamm explained in his interview. "It's based on oil speculators and what they called landmen, which are the guys that run around and try to acquire mineral rights and land rights in the hope of speculating and finding oil."
Who is in the cast of Landman?
Thornton is confirmed as the lead character named Tommy Norris, a crisis manager for an oil company in Texas. Given the show's premise, it's clear that this character will have a lot of pressure put on him! 😅
Moore is cast as Cami, a friend to Tommy, and wife to another notable man in the oil industry. At the Cannes Film Festival this year, the actress gave some more insight to the series. "I play an oil tycoon's wife… lots of nice clothes," she said. "The substance of it is really exploring the issues around oil, petroleum, on all sides... and then, of course, as Taylor does so well, there's delicious drama within and family dynamics."
Hamm will play the role of Monty Miller, a supposed friend and professional partner with Tommy. He's also a veteran in the world of oil and business, which will obviously come in handy given the show's premise.
As for the rest of the cast, expect to see Ali Larter, Michelle Randolph, Jacob Lofland, Kayla Wallace, James Jordan, Mark Collie, and Paulina Chávez. If any of these names sounds familiar to you, it's because they should! Many of these actors have appeared in fan-favorite Western shows like 1923, Yellowstone, and When Calls the Heart.
Is there a trailer for Landman?
There sure is! And right from the start, it's obvious that this show is sure to be explosive... literally! Among the sweeping camera shots of sprawling oil fields and massive drilling rigs, the Landman trailer features plenty of action-packed blast scenes as well as a look into the lives of those with their boots on the ground versus those who reap the benefits of the tumultuous industry.
"Getting oil out of the ground's the most dangerous job in the world," says Billy Bob Thornton in a voiceover. He continues, "The oil and gas industry makes $3 billion a day in pure profit. But before any of that money is made, you got to secure the land and manage the people. That’s my job. The first part is pretty simple, it’s the second part that can get you killed."
When does Landman debut?
Get ready to step into the world of this booming business! Landman premieres Sunday, November 17, on Paramount+. If you aren't already a member of the streaming platform, you can get a basic subscription for $7.99 per month or a subscription bundled with Showtime for $12.99 per month. Landman will debut with a two-episode premiere, then each following episode of the first season will drop on the platform every Sunday until the finale on January 12, 2025.
Not only can you catch Landman on Paramount+, but you can also stream a majority of Sheridan's other shows, including, 1923, 1883, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, and Special Ops: Lioness.
Bonus: there's already talks of Landman season 2! Moore explained that her part on season 1 is complete, but followed that sentiment by saying that she's "excited" to begin season 2, which apparently "will be at the beginning of next year."
Sounds like Sheridan has a guaranteed hit on his hands!
