Attention, history buffs! This guide to the best war movies of all time is about to become a favorite reference for you (in addition to all the western movies you love!). Though tragic in nature, these stories take a look at some of the most pivotal moments in history, often brought about by heroes that altered the world’s landscape forever.

This collection includes Civil War movies, films about World War I and World War II, and takes on recent events in Afghanistan and Iraq. You’ll learn about the stern leaders who marched their troops into battle, selfless soldiers and their sacrifices, and the lengths some will go to save those in the trenches with them. While we included newer Academy Award-winning releases like 1917, there are also classics like Saving Private Ryan and All Quiet on the Western Front as well. Some might be happy to find a few that detail the heart-wrenching romances of those on the front lines.

Though we can’t say these are for the weak-stomached viewer, they're incredibly informative and will open you up to many different viewpoints. No matter why you're tuning in, one thing is for certain: These acts of patriotism will stay with you long after the credits roll.
