Yellowstone is the Western series that had everyone talking these last few seasons! It tells the gritty, modern story behind the Dutton family, aka the powerful owners of the largest ranch in all of Montana. A status this high comes with lots of drama and enemies. Don't worry, though, the brooding cowboys and witty cowgirls know how to handle their own! The series concluded with season 5 in 2024.
1923
This Yellowstone prequel stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Cara and Jacob Dutton, the leaders of the ranch-owning family at the time. If you love a 20th century period piece, this one is for you. (This one will make more sense once you've watched 1883, the first Yellowstone prequel.) It completed its second (and apparently final) season in early 2025.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves
Diving into the world of U.S. history, Lawmen: Bass Reeves focuses on a real-life historic figure. You'll watch as the first Black U.S. Marshal makes a serious impact in the world of American law in the 1800s. Being in his position is no easy feat, but he does so with integrity and confidence, much like any leading man in a Sheridan show.
Special Ops: Lioness
The CIA's Lioness Program is made up of some of the toughest and sharpest women in the game. It kind of needs to be, because they're going to be responsible for bringing down a terrorist group with some looming ill-intentioned plans. Zoe Saldaña and Nicole Kidman are just two of the Hollywood names starring in this show.
1883
If you love Yellowstone, you simply have to watch its prequel, 1883. Beyond the star-studded cast, Sheridan does a beautiful job setting up the Dutton family's origin story as they pioneer across America in search of what will become the Dutton ranch. Don't worry about committing to another four seasons—it's a limited series!
Mayor of Kingstown
Mayor of Kingstown diverges slightly from Sheridan's other projects in that it's set farther northwest, in Michigan. Jeremy Irons returns to Sheridan's team as one of two powerful brothers in Kingstown, who act as the liaisons between prisoners and the Kingstown community. When a young guard, Sam, is set up to deliver a letter for a prisoner, Irons' character works to get him off the hook. The series is already renewed for season 4, expected in October 2025.
Tulsa King
Taylor's Paramount crime show began airing its first season at the end of 2022 and will premiere season 3 in fall 2025. It stars Sylvester Stallone as a mobster who, after serving 25 years in prison for murder, is banished to Tulsa to re-establish an Italian mafia family. Say hello to another Western set drama!
The Last Cowboy
You may not be a reality TV show kind of person, but you will be this kind of reality show person. The Last Cowboy has lots of heart—it's an unscripted show about real-life cowboys and cowgirls competing for a one million dollar prize in the sport of Reining, one of the toughest and most dangerous sports in the world.
Sicario
Sheridan's first film as a screenwriter stars Emily Blunt as an FBI agent who's enlisted into a task force to bring down a brutal Mexican drug cartel. It's an action thriller and received critical acclaim in 2011 for both the acting and the writing.
Hell or High Water
The phrase "come hell or high water" typically means "do whatever needs to be done, no matter the circumstances." This meaning plays into the plot of Sheridan's second foray into the Western genre, which was released in 2016. Two brothers carry out a series of bank robberies to save their family ranch in West Texas while two Texan rangers pursue them.
Wind River
Sheridan wrote this movie to raise awareness about the high statistics of violence against Indigenous women, both on and off reservations. It stars an FBI agent and fish and wildlife service tracker tasked with investigating the murder of a young woman on a reservation in Wyoming. He seems to enjoy working with certain actors, as you'll recognize Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater from Yellowstone!
Sicario: Day Of The Soldado
Sicario: Day Of The Soldado is the 2018 sequel to his first film. The war on drugs has escalated at the Mexican border, and the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists into the United States. Make sure to catch up on the first two hits because a third installment is reportedly in the works!
Without Remorse
The 2021 film Without Remorse is based on the 1993 book by the same name. The ever-impressive Michael B. Jordan stars in this action-thriller which is the origin story of U.S. Navy Seal John Kelly. Kelly embarks on a revenge mission after Russian hitmen kill his pregnant wife and unit members.
Those Who Wish Me Dead
Released in the same year as Without Remorse, this film is another thriller based on a novel by the same name. Taylor returns to Montana, where a smokejumper aids a little boy pon the run from assassins after he witnesses the murder of his father. If you don't like fire or are afraid of forest fires, this is not the film for you.
Landman
Based on the Texas Monthly eleven-part podcast series Boomtown, this popular show is set in the world of West‑Texas oil, as Billy Bob Thornton leads as an enforcer navigating corporate, cartel, and local tensions. It will return for a second season in November 2025.
The Madison (Upcoming)
A contemporary, character‑driven Western starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Fox, following a New York family adjusting to life in Montana’s Madison River Valley. Billed as a spinoff of Yellowstone, it's currently unclear how the two will connect.The series began filming in late summer 2024 and is expected to debut some time in 2025, but no dates have been announced yet.
Dutton Ranch (Upcoming)
Get ready for more Dutton drama! A spinoff focusing on Kelly Reilly's Beth Dutton and Cole Hauser's Rip Wheeler is underway. The show, tentatively titled Dutton Ranch, will continue their saga post‑Yellowstone finale. It's set to premiere on the Paramount Network this fall.
Y: Marshals (Upcoming)
Luke Grimes returns as Kayce Dutton, now a U.S. Marshal enforcing justice in Montana, blending cowboy grit with government duty. It's been confirmed that the show surrounding the youngest Dutton sibling will air on CBS in early 2026.
The Road (Upcoming)
Get excited! Sheridan is teaming up with several country music masterminds for a new road trip singing competition. Co‑created with Blake Shelton and Keith Urban, The Road is aiming for authenticity by taking performers on real tour stops. It's coming to CBS in fall 2025.
NOLA King (Under Development)
Tulsa King is headed to the Big Easy for this spinoff, and Samuel L. Jackson is joining! Jackson will lead as Russell Lee Washington Jr., a tough-as-nails mobster who’s ready to stir up some trouble after being released from prison. Tentatively titled NOLA King, the show will spin out of Tulsa King Season 3, where Jackson’s character will make his debut alongside Sylvester Stallone’s Dwight "The General" Manfredi.
