As is the case with most people over the age of 36 (and I'm way over the age of 36), I was a latecomer to TikTok. Of course I'd heard about it here and there, but it wasn't until the early quarantine months of 2020 that I finally started watching TikTok videos. And that was obviously because I was around all the Drummond kids and I ultimately had to join in.
For those of you who've never darkened the door of TikTok, I'll try to explain it in the best way a 52-year-old woman can. It's a social media app where users post videos, and the content ranges from funny dog moments to closeup recipes, from exercise tips to popular dance moves, from makeup tutorials to extreme sports, from spouses pranking each other to artists painting masterpieces, to random moments involving everyday people in their homes, jobs, families. Never have I seen a platform with a more wide-ranging (and often hilarious) subject matter. You never, ever know what you're going to get when you open TikTok, and I'm sure that's part of its charm. It can be addictive, and judging from the time I have occasionally wasted scrolling through videos, it makes me worry about what the long-term societal effects will be. But I'll worry about that tomorrow!
As for posting on TikTok, I don't do it very frequently but have been jumping in more and more just for fun. I thought I'd give you a little sampling of the kinds of things I've shared lately, in case you don't use TikTok. Ladd snake prank videos are just around the corner!!
First up, Taco Shells and Cheese! I'm telling you, there is something magical about this easy mac and cheese dish.
Never gets old!
Next up...an easy Strawberry Tart that uses two circles of refrigerated pie dough! I love this tart because it doesn't look like something made with storebought dough.
Serve it with ice cream...or whipped cream...or both. And use peaches or blueberries (or both) instead!
Just posted this stromboli video this week. It's Heaven!
(By the way, I have a Broccoli Cheese version of this stromboli in my new cookbook...so darn delicious.)
And Wafflewiches! Gotta love them!
Are they panini? Or are they wafflewiches? That is the question.
Tiktok also has what they call "trends" where the same sound is used by different users, and the post follows a theme. Here's an example, where people answer frequently asked questions.
Alex helped me film this. It took me about six tries before I did the hand gestures without getting off rhythm and messing up. I need to post the blooper reel!
And in closing, here's a trend on TikTok that pokes fun at what a person is saying vs. what they're actually thinking. You might get a kick out of it.
And maybe you'll relate to it? 😂
Okay, that's my TikTok update for today. I'll keep you posted on my snake pranks. I've been scheming...
