When Paige Drummond told her Instagram followers she'd spotted a "ranch rabbit" in Pawhuska, most people probably pictured a long-eared woodland critter hopping across the grass. Instead, they got Rusty, the Drummond family's floppy-eared basset hound, sprawled out on his back with his ears stretched wide like wings. His eyes are closed, his paws are tucked, and his face says it all: life is good.
It's common knowledge that the Drummond family's love for animals runs deep. The ranch is a paradise for horses, cows, the occasional stray cat, and plenty of dogs, from Ree's yellow Lab, Lucy, to Alex's golden retriever, George. (Though Georgie might be heading to Hollywood if he nails his Airbud audition!) Rusty fits right in with the four-legged crew, alongside his basset brother, Fred. They're equally skilled at napping in the sun and charming anyone who walks by.
Paige, in particular, seems to have a special place in her heart for the basset hounds. Just before her wedding, Fred happily inserted himself into the festivities, trotting around like a self-appointed groomsman. He took his role as wedding crasher very seriously and Paige didn’t seem to mind one bit!
It feels inevitable that she'll follow in her sister Alex's footsteps and bring home a dog of her own someday. If she stays in Dallas, maybe she’ll get a golden retriever and dub it her "Lone Star Lion." Or she could go the opposite route and surprise everyone with a dachshund she calls a "Texas Tiger." 😂
For now, Rusty's got the spotlight—stretched out in the grass, ears fanned like a cartoon bunny, and proving you don't have to move a muscle to earn the title of "ranch rabbit." All you need is a pair of floppy ears and a cute face!
