It's safe to say that when Ree Drummond up and married a cowboy and moved from the 'burbs to rural Pawhuska, she was a little bit of a fish out of water. (The proof is in the story of how she got The Pioneer Woman nickname!) It took a few years, but she eventually shed her city-girl ways and settled in to life on the Drummond ranch.
Over the years, Ree has gotten used to rising before five every morning, trudging through snow and ice to feed animals, and driving more than an hour to see a movie on the big screen. Her central nervous system isn't fazed by Tornado Valley thunderstorms, she's a pro at getting cattle to move off the road, and setting prairie grass on fire is part of her annual spring cleaning. And that's all on top of wrangling a husband, kids, and seven dogs!
It may seem like a lot to handle, but life in Pawhuska is unlike any other. "Being on the ranch, absent the buildings and highways of cities, we’re really able to see the four seasons of the year in all their dramatic glory," Ree says.

Rainy Days
When you live on a ranch, all rain is good rain. That's why this thunderstorm that formed right above the house was equal parts beautiful and a little scary. Ree described the lightening as, "The battle of good vs. evil, meteorological edition."
The Drummond Dock
"Sometimes I feel like our old dock," Ree says. "Warping boards (dry skin), vegetation growing where it shouldn’t (stray hairs?), partially underwater (age 50), no one wants to sit on it (😂??), but still solidly afloat and happy to see the sun come up every morning."

This gate has been here a long time. According to Ree's father-in-law, it was built in 1946—the same year It's a Wonderful Life was in theaters. "Every time I drive by this sign, I will think of Jimmy Stewart," Ree says.
Learning Goosespeak
This feathery family took up residence in the Drummond pond earlier this summer and Ree loves them so much. "How do you say 'Please stay forever, I'll feed you anything you want' in goosespeak?" she says.
A Time to Burn
Every few years in the spring, Ladd and his fellow cowboys set some of the Drummond ranch on fire. It sounds crazy, but's actually a crucial part of grassland management—and makes for some gorgeous photos.
