Some made me laugh, some made me cry, all made me smile.

It's been a week since we said goodbye to Ladd's dad, my father-in-law Chuck. It was a beautiful celebration of his life---his six grandchildren were there, Ladd gave the eulogy, and we got to laugh and cry and laugh again with extended family while telling all the stories about Chuck that were 100% him. We also got to look at photos, and I wanted to share some with you.

Abs of Steel

That's Chuck (on the left) with his brother Tom on a family vacation. Given his love of sweets and pop, my kids got a huge kick out of his six pack!

This is my favorite photo of Chuck from his younger years. I see a glimmer of both Ladd and Tim, as well as all six of the grandchildren. I love his confident, dignified expression!

College Sweethearts

There he is with Nan, my mother-in-law, at a sorority party at Oklahoma State! Chuck loved that Nan was taller than he, and he joked that he hoped some of her height would rub off on future generations. (It did! Ha!)

The End of a Drought

It was a sweltering August evening when Chuck and Nan got married, but a huge storm broke out halfway through the ceremony...and it didn't stop raining for days. It wound up breaking a serious drought in the area, which Chuck always thought was a good sign.

Married Graduates

Nan and Chuck were married while still in college, so they graduated as a married couple! They would soon move back to the ranch and start building a family together.

Spiffy Plaid Pants

This is the house where Ladd (front, next to Nan) grew up, and the house where we would later raise our own kids. I have never seen Chuck wear plaid pants except in this photo; I think Nan definitely dressed him that day!

Busy Social Calendar!

There were so many photos of Pa-Pa at parties with Nan and other friends. I love this photo because Chuck looks so relaxed and happy, Nan looks so beautiful, and they are sitting next to their best friend, Carolyn...who happens to be my BFF Hyacinth's mother-in-law!

Granddaughters

Chuck wasn't one to sit and read to his grandkids; as soon as they were old enough, he put them on a horse and showed them how to work. He was both gentle and tough, and I know the kids learned so much from him.

Givin' Orders

For example, haha. "You go through that gate and get that bull that got away and drive him down the fence into that other pasture!!" Meanwhile, Bryce is in the back, hanging on for dear life.

Happiest Working

Pa-Pa was happiest working, whether he was on his horse (this is Ol' Yeller) or in his pickup. I'm so glad we have so many photos of him working with Ladd, Tim, and the kids.

Pa-Pa, Todd, and Suzie

One of my all-time favorite photos of Chuck. We were all down at the farm we used to have near Waurika, Oklahoma, and Todd was the youngest of the grandkids. He wasn't quite old enough to go work all day, but Pa-Pa (and Suzie) gave him a ride around the pens. (Todd still looks like this to me.)

Father and Son

Ladd is feeling the loss of his dad. He'll miss their conversations about the old days, and always loved hearing Chuck's perspective about all things agriculture. He's glad they got to spend so much time together in recent years.

Classic Pa-Pa

Another one of my favorite photos of my favorite father-in-law. He was always so kind to me---and so supportive. He filmed for my TV show, greeted visitors at The Mercantile, watched my morning show appearances. In the father-in-law department, I lucked out.

One of my kids snapped this photo of Pa-Pa (and Nan's) headstone. I love his brand made out of wildflowers, and his hat and spurs made me cry. I like to think they are having fun together again.

How I'll Remember Him

I'll always have this picture in my mind when I think of Chuck. On his horse, holding the reins, surrounded by his family (and cattle!) I'm not sure what was making him smile in this particular photo, but I like to imagine that he'd just heard there was rain in the forecast. 😊
